Award Winning Porridge in the Making



Our very own Paddy O’Connell from PaddyO’s Cereals will travel to Scotland this weekend to represent Ireland in the World Porridge Making Championships where he will compete for the coveted ‘Golden Spurtle’ .

Paddy has enlisted the help of his Uncle, renowned chef, Rory O’Connell and together they have come up with a winning formula.  The porridge in the world championship final is only made from three ingredients – oats, water and salt.  Paddy is using local ingredients which are sure to give his porridge an edge.  

“I am using water from a natural spring in Laois. I am using oriel sea salt which has been kiln dried,” he explained.

And of course his main ingredient, the oats, have been sourced from local farmers and milled in Portlaoise.

Since 1996, the World Porridge Making Championship has taken place each year in the Scottish Highlands village of Carrbridge with competitors from all around the world taking part.  This year we have no doubt Paddy will bring home the big prize and we wish him and his team the very best of luck.
